Touring Breweries and Beer Tasting in the Blue Ridge

If you're interested in something fun to do over a beautiful weekend in the Hollow, why not venture out in the countryside around Charlottesville to tour some of our local breweries? Beer tasting in the Blue Ridge is fast becoming a favorite past time for locals and travelers alike.

A lot of folks come to the Hollow to see historical sites like Monticello, Mr. Jefferson's mountain home and there are those who come to the region to tour the many quality wineries in the area.  But some travelers here to enjoy the spender of  the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains may have already explored the historical sites; some, perhaps,  may have toured tons of vineyards and tirelessly traced the wine trails until their tannin tasters are intolerably tired.
Fellow fun-seekers fatigued from fruit may very well be hoping for hops in the Hollow!   If so, we happen to have quite a selection of great local breweries nearby.

Hops happiness happens just seven miles outside the Hollow in the town of Crozet.  It is there that you will find the "Gift of Great Beer," Star Hill Brewery.  Founder and Master Brewer Mark Thompson and his team of beer connoisseurs stand ready to welcome tasters Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 12:00 noon.  They''ll even show you around the tanks on Saturdays and Sundays and send you back to the Hollow with a growler of your favorite brew.

After Star Hill Brewery, head down Hwy 250 to 151 towards Afton.  You'll see Blue Mountain Brewery on your left. Taylor Smack and his crew open for business at 11:30 and offer a variety of food for hungry tasters.

Take a left after you leave Blue Mountain and head to Nellysford, the home Wild Wolf Brewing Company.  They're open for business from 10 to 7 pm daily and ready to fill a growler with your favorite beer or root beer.

Finally, maybe before you head back to the Hollow, you'll want to check out Devils Backbone Brewing Company south of Wild Wolf in Roseland.  You're gonna love the place and, if you've been out all day, it's a great place for dinner.

So, here's to hops in the Hollow.  Cheers!

Nature Walks Reveal the Fabulous Zebra Butterfly

Take springtime nature walks in Sugar Hollow and see our fabulous giant zebra butterfly. You will recognize it by its large triangular black and white striped wings with blue dots near each wing's base and a red marking near the body. It is also known as a zebra swallowtail butterfly.

Perhaps you are fortunate as we are to have a near perfect habitat for the zebra butterfly with pawpaw trees, (food for their larvae), open woodlands near streams and rivers, pasture and pine woods. Sugar Hollow has an abundance of all of these features.
With the right nourishment their mating season can extend up to six months. They feed on the nectar and pollen of the flowers of blackberry (we have a pasture full of the wild delicious sort) lilac (check), redbud (check), verbena and common milkweed (check-check).

Not only does the zebra swallowtail enjoy a rich habitat at The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm, but, as well, you will enjoy our Blue Ridge Mountain views and leisurely visits to our nearby wineries, micro-breweries and historical sites.
