A Good Book To Read

Just finished The Power of One by a wonderful Australian author, Bryce Courtenay.

.

One of the best books I have read, a joy and a pleasure. Run, don't walk to grab this book and read it!

This is the memoir of Peekay, an English boy born in South Africa in the late 1930's, during WW II.  Peekay battles through every adversity and challenge and refuses to be deterred from accomplishing his ultimate goal. Striving for his life long goal (you'll have to read the book to find out what it is) provides the framework for Peekay's story. This motto is given him and it is his guiding light through all of the challenges that life throws at him -- "Little beat big when little is smart. First with the head and then with the heart."

From the Los Angeles Times Book Review
“Totally engrossing . . . [presents] the metamorphosis of a most remarkable young man and the almost spiritual influence he has on others . . . Peekay has both humor and a refreshingly earthy touch, and his adventures, at times, are hair-raising in their suspense.”

From the New York Times
“The Power of One has everything: suspense, the exotic, violence; mysticism, psychology and magic; schoolboy adventures, drama.”

Read it. Let me know what you think. What books do you recommend for us bibliophiles? Have you read a good book lately?

VA WINERIES - - - IN THREES

Three VA wineries, 3 expert winemakers, 3 friends, 3 varietals blended into one new vintage.

Mark your calendars 3/3/2011
On this date the new vintage, "3", will be first offered for sale.

The creative winemakers from 3 of your favorite wineries, Matthieu Finot of King Family Vineyards, Jake Busching of Pollak Vineyards, and Emily Pelton of Veritas have collaborated to create an excellent new wine. They took the best of their 2009 barrels and ceated a new wine called, appropriately,  "3".

This limited edition wine blends cabernet franc from Pollak, petit verdot from Veritas, and merlot from King Family.

The wine will be released on the 3rd day of the 3rd month, 2011 and will cost $33.

Only 150 cases were bottled and will only be for sale at the 3 vineyards.

The creators hope to send a message in a bottle to encourage collaboration throughout the Virginia wine industry. As Finot of King Family Vineyards says," To get better, we need to work together - if we don't work together, we don't grow together."

The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm is close to the 3 vineyards. The first day of release of the wine is Thursday, March 3. Plan a stay with us on March 3 or over the weekend, March 4-5 so that you can go to one or more of the wineries to purchase your bottle (or more) of this exciting new limited-edition wine!
