Take springtime nature walks in Sugar Hollow and see our fabulous giant zebra butterfly. You will recognize it by its large triangular black and white striped wings with blue dots near each wing's base and a red marking near the body. It is also known as a zebra swallowtail butterfly.
Perhaps you are fortunate as we are to have a near perfect habitat for the zebra butterfly with pawpaw trees, (food for their larvae), open woodlands near streams and rivers, pasture and pine woods. Sugar Hollow has an abundance of all of these features.
With the right nourishment their mating season can extend up to six months. They feed on the nectar and pollen of the flowers of blackberry (we have a pasture full of the wild delicious sort) lilac (check), redbud (check), verbena and common milkweed (check-check).
Not only does the zebra swallowtail enjoy a rich habitat at The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm, but, as well, you will enjoy our Blue Ridge Mountain views and leisurely visits to our nearby wineries, micro-breweries and historical sites.
