Charlottesville, VA The Deer Are Yarding Up

Tis the season, the deer are yarding up. Here in Sugar Hollow we saw 11 in the yard tonight. The mating season is over-- during the summer and fall we see the does and fawns staying together as individual families, then about mid-December, after the mating season the deer will "yard up". Several families will gather together and graze on our lawn. The winter months are the only time we see such deer behavior. It is still hunting season so we don't see the bucks very often. They are too smart to spend much time out in the open and for the most part stay hidden in the woods. It is a real pleasure to observe the deer behavior throughout the course of the year. Especially in the warmer months we enjoy sitting on our upper deck watching the wild life show below.
